The earlier development of printing was important to the diffusion process and the role of organizations such as the Royal Society was also important. Crucial to the progress made by the inventors was the diffusion of scientific and engineering knowledge which enabled them to build on each other’s work. The inventors at the time applied scientific knowledge to solving the problems that existed and after long periods of trial and error, including the development of new and better materials, were able to produce a working steam engine. Allied to this scientific progress was a belief in Europe at the time that progress could be made and problems could be solved. The reasons why those needs were met was due to the scientific progress that was going on in 16th and 17th century Europe concerning the knowledge of atmospheric pressure, how to create vacuums and of the properties of gases. But needs are common and they are not always met. A vital one was the presence of a need, initially that of how to get water out of mines and later how to drive the new machinery that was being produced as part of the industrial revolution. There were a number of conditions necessary for the invention of the steam engine. This paper was written in order to examine the conditions needed, and the order of the discoveries made, for the invention of the steam engine. Throughout the next century, steam powered railway travel took Western Europe, and eventually America, by storm. He convinced the owners of the company to use his steam powered locomotive and, in 1825, the company became the first railway line to carry passengers and goods on locomotives created using Stephenson's design. He designed and built the train while working for the Stockton and Darlington Railway Line. ![]() The man who actually created the first steam railway locomotive was George Stephenson. However, his locomotive was designed for travel on roads, not railways. ![]() Richard Trethivick, who was sponsored by Samuel Homfray, built the world's first steam locomotive in 1803. However, the railways weren't all that fast and, with the development of the steam engine, new, faster ways of travel became available. The rails were easier to move on than roads. They consisted of horse-drawn carriages that ran on iron or wooden rails. The Birth of the Railroad Before the steam powered locomotive, railways did exist. Before the steam engine, people used carriages pulled by horses for quick land travel and man or wind powered boats for traveling on the water. People were able to get around both land and water more quickly and more efficiently with steam railway locomotives and steam boats. After one hundred years of being improved by inventors, the steam engine began to be used for steam powered travel. Effects on Transportation The steam engine revolutionized travel in Western Europe. After Thomas Savery created his steam engine, inventors elaborated and improved on his idea. Not only did the steam engine help solve problems that were impossible to solve before, but it even helped lessen the amount of manual labor it took to do many tasks. More about the steam engine An Explosion of Popularity Thanks to Thomas Savery and Denis Papin, the idea of using steam to power machines became very popular with inventors everywhere. A cold water sprinkle was then to condense the steam so that a vacuum could suck more of the water out of the shaft through a bottom valve. The steam would force water in a closed container out of a mine shaft. ![]() Savery's steam engine used steam that was under pressure to make it work. Thomas Savery wanted to solve the problem of getting water out of mine shaft. After Denis Papin invented the pressure cooker in 1679, Thomas Savery, who wanted to solve the problem of getting water out of mine shaft, was inspired to apply some of the same mechanics, such as the piston and cylinder engine, to his own engine. ![]() In 1698, Thomas Savery, an Englishman, formed the basis of the modern world's transportation by inventing the steam engine.
